My original idea was that soldiers are not morons and would surely notice that so many of them were bring killed on away missions, meaning they knew their fate, therefore making them heroes. I consulted a friend of my wife's who ultimately became the primary source for this article. She even wrote a letter to the editor saying that being featured in the magazine was one of the greatest privileges of her life. The article was also praised by online critics as an original take on a modern cliche.
